Just Like Home: Review of Miss J La's Fur Babies Cat Cafe & Adoption Centre

I grew up about close to the Canadian border between Minnesota and Manitoba and we used to visit Winnipeg often when I was a kid.  My parents still live in the area and when I heard there was a cat cafe, I told them to get their passports out of the safe- I was coming for a visit.

We made a day trip of it with plans for lunch and a bit of shopping in addition to visiting the cat cafe.  As we made the two hour journey from Grand Forks, ND, we reminisced about the past while I explained the dos and don'ts of cat cafe etiquette.

After lunch, we made our way to the cafe, off a major street in a strip mall.  It took a bit of searching to find it- look for the Vogue Dance Company signage!

Inside the lobby area, we met Jennifer aka Miss J La.  She welcomed us warmly and provided some information on the cats before showing us in.  At the time of our visit, she had been open nearly ten months and currently had eight kitties in the main room with a couple new arrivals in back, acclimating to the environment before they would join the others.

The main focus of this non-profit is to find forever homes for rescued cats and in addition to the entrance fee, Jennifer accepts donations (litter, food, toys and $) to help cover the cats needs.  She's been successful with her mission as 36 adoptions have been completed as of November, 2017.

The physical space continues to evolve as she fine tunes things to create a more cafe-like environment.  The day we visited, we found freshly painted walls, colorful rugs, comfy sofas and enough cat toys to keep the fussiest feline satisfied.  The room was spacious, fresh, clean and the effort to create a loving, home-like atmosphere was evident.

We were offered a cup of freshly brewed coffee and it was good and strong, just the way we northern Plains people like it!  Jennifer explained that she was working on a more substantial menu, but it was going to take time as most of the donations went straight to cat care.

Kitty-wise, we were completely entertained by the crew in residence at Miss J La's.  They were a well-socialized and curious bunch that were not afraid to come up and check us out.  Despite it being mid-afternoon, all were awake with a couple of particularly rambunctious boys that chased toys, cats and anything else that caught their eye.

Overall, our time at Miss J La's was light-hearted fun.  Jennifer is a friendly and caring host who has created a feline-focused haven that puts the cats needs first and foremost.  The atmosphere is simple and straightforward, and if you are looking to play with cats, or adopt one, consider it the perfect way to spend an hour or two.
