Cat vs Cafe (70/30)
Tree Time: Review of Cafe Mocha Shibuya
The good folks at Cafe Mocha know what they are doing.
With six locations in the Tokyo metro area, the spaces they have created are so beautiful, they initially struck me as more interior design haven than cat cafe. I was concerned the cats might just be an afterthought.
Lucky for us, they aren't.
Felines are the definitely the focus of Cafe Mocha Shibuya, with 15-20 gorgeous cats per location, in a variety of breeds. The main feature of each Mocha is a large wooden tree filled with perches and platforms for the cats to sleep, get away from people or just look plain cute while you sip your coffee. This upscale gimmick actually enhances the experience rather than detracts because it creates a fantastical environment for both humans and cats.
Located on the 8th and 9th floors of a commercial building, this location sees decent traffic as nearby Shibuya crossing is the busiest intersection in the world! The downstairs level has cozy nooks for cuddling while the upstairs features the wooden tree and lots of open room for the cats to run and play. Both floors offer spectacular views of the surrounding area.
But with beauty comes a price and Mocha locations are fairly expensive, but not outrageously so compared to its competitors. Mocha charges 1200 yen ($10.86) per hour or 200 yen per ten minutes with a separate (and optional) 350 yen fee for unlimited beverages from a machine that dispenses coffee and tea drinks.
Being my first Mocha visit, the hour I spent at this location was particularly satisfying. The beauty of the atmosphere and cats drew me in and made me an instant fan.
